Why no one takes HR seriously reason #139

by John on August 24, 2011

Today most HR pro’s in Miami all took a giant step backward in the credibility department courtesy of our local professional organization. “Surely you must be joking John? That’s a pretty bold statement” I can almost hear you saying under your breath. It’s not; take a look at the words in the circle…

GMSHRM (The Greater Miami Society for Human Resources Management) sent all of their members (and former members) an email promoting their upcoming “Excellence in HR Awards” and in the tag cloud, well you can read it right there…Party Planning.

Deep down I’m actually glad they included the words, really. Party Planning is a helluva lot more fun than benefits, community, staffing, and don’t get me started on payroll. Hell, I threw a party for myself when I didn’t have to process payroll anymore and I’m sure my former employer is equally as happy too.

Thank you GMSHRM, I appreciate you being brutally honest with the business community and promoting the one thing that HR folks in Miami should be known for, party planning.

So just remember the next time you’ve got a question about your benefits, or you need to make a change to your insurance, or you’d like to have a conversation about career growth and development go see your HR person.I’m sure that they’ll be more than happy to help you just as soon as they finish planning that party.

Now the real question is which one of you is gonna beat the CEO’s keg stand record?

Such a shame, for some reason one of the best ways to get a group of people (professionals) together is to offer food and music…a party. Sign of the Times?

Perhaps “team building facilitator” would have been more apropos. But since that is a question of what is appropriate, it is better suited for HR 🙂
