Have we reached “Peak Facebook”?

by John on March 13, 2021

Cookie and I were out on our evening walk recently. I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts (Make Me Smart) and thinking about random bullshit.

Well, let’s be honest, most of the stuff I think and write about is random bullshit, but that’s a story for another time.

The one thing that kept bugging me was the simple question, have we reached “Peak Facebook”?

Yes, I am borrowing this concept from geophysicist Marion King Hubbert’s “peak theory” which simply states that the production of global crude oil follows a bell-shaped curve and that eventually we gonna run out of the Black Gold/Texas Tea that made ol’ Jed a millionaire.

Looking back on my own social media consumption, I have noticed a big decline in my use of Facebook, and an increase in other socials, Twitter, Insta and even FB Messenger.

Now don’t get me wrong, I still hit the site, but now I find myself doing it on my iPhone more than on my MacBook. The UX on the Mac is just godawful and I find myself shaking my head more often than if I’m using it on my phone, hence my random thought.

I also don’t think that FB is going anywhere soon, but I will say I’m enjoying twitter more, and monitoring the Instas is even more critical for me because that’s how I can reach our students.

I did ask Cookie what she thought and I was met with a series of barks that expressed a desire to walk back to the house because she was tired of chasing the lizards on the sidewalks and needed to go bug her other human. Maybe she’s on to something. Maybe it’s too easy to bug each other on the FB platform and we should just try and do it in real life.

It may be too early to say this but hey, you never know…Facebook is Dead. Long Live Facebook!
